Forward "Snake" Drill
Level of Difficulty/Target Skating Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Forward/Defence/Both: Both. Good drill to increase offensive speed
Powerskating Technique Skill: Strong Edge & Upper Body Control
Result: Improved Agility, Power, Speed & Acceleration
Drill description: Quick forward crossovers in "s" shape up the middle of the ice with acceleration.

In order to outskate your defensive opponent as you carry the puck up the ice it is important that you maximize the edge power of each skating push.

Practice a quick crossover in a clockwise direction, followed by a quick crossover in a counterclockwise direction.

Pushing sequence starts with a right forward inside edge/left forward outside/right forward inside - PLANT the left forward inside edge and let your outside shoulder move forward to maximize momentum.

Repeat.
To achieve maximum edge power use the 100% weighted peak power push, for acceleration use the "whole blade" push, finishing off with an ankle and toe "snap" on each push.

Remember! Use your strong shoulder position to help keep your upper body strong and working with you to maximize your momentum.

Drill description:

  • Start in one corner of the ice

  • Keep outside shoulder in front - watch that the shoulders don't dip into the center of the circle - keep them level
  • Practice proper crossover technique pushing the leg out and then under
  • After 2 circle completions, skate into the middle zone of the ice and repeat in the opposite direction
  • After 2 circle completions, skate into the other endzone and repeat in the original direction

Repeat backwards - remember to sit back into the knees and press 100% bodyweight into the middle of the blade on EACH and EVERY push.

Drill description: Get into the "READY" position by placing your feet into a "V" position and placing your weight onto your pushing foot.

GO - push in a 45 degree angle direction and fully extend the leg to the point where you lock your knee and DRAG it along the ice.

Continue to glide on the inside edge and return the extended leg to a "V" position and get SET to push onto the next foot.
